New to DAS

What is a DAS? Distributed Antenna systems (DAS for short) refers systems that are installed in buildings to amplify particular radio signals. These are critical for First Responders and their ability to communicate with one another and allows them to perform lifesaving duties. Sometimes a public safety DAS is called ERRCS (Emergency Responder Radio Communications Systems)

A DAS can also be used for private radio systems. This can include VHF and UHF, Analog or Digital. With proper design, a DAS can include multiple types of radio system, both public safety and private, saving the customer the expense of multiple solutions.

DAS networks are typically implemented in locations such as condos, shopping malls, school campuses, office buildings, or larger venues such as sports stadiums and event arenas where the outdoor signals have a hard time getting in.

Definition: A distributed antenna system, or DAS, is a network of spatially separated antenna nodes connected to a common source via a transport medium that provides wireless service within a geographic area or structure.

In its most simplified form, a DAS has two basic components:

  • Signal Source

    • A DAS needs to be fed signals from somewhere, typically from an antenna on the roof or an on-site BTS (Base Transceiver Station)

  • Distribution system

    • The signals are sent to indoor antennas by various ways: active (fiber optic) or passive (coax). Sometimes it is best to use a hybrid solution that uses both technologies.

Here at Motorola Solutions, we can integrate a DAS into Astro, MotoTRBO, Nitro, etc. to make a total solution for our customers.

Our DAS Solutions team offers material and services to provide a seamless experience giving the customer a robust product.
